basically extended the bush tax cuts for those under $450,000, modified the state tax, moved the capital gains rate up to 20%, was that a good or bad deal for the american people? >> we don't know yet because what we did is half of the budget. the tax cut part of the budget. we didn't do how to pay for it part of the budget. the problem that we have gotten ourselves in to is people trying to do budgets as if the taxes and spending are unrelated. they keep talking about reducing the size of government with unspecified cuts or to spending problem, not a taxing problem. but when you try to pin people down on numbers, you find out that what they're talking about is spending too much money on social security, medicare, head start, transportation or even embassy security. if you look at the budget last couple of years, embassy security was being cut so when they talk about these cuts, without specifying them, you're not really doing a budget. we passed -- we passed a -- almost $4 trillion tax cut without an indication of how to be paid for. now we have the sequester kind of hanging over our he

get it right. inlike a -- unlike a tax change and folks are going to want to know what happened to the social security or medicare. but also an acknowledgment it's not going to get you the $4 trillion and that government spending cuts are going to be required for tax increases. you voted for the tax measure that we just saw. in part because you thought it was better than the alternative that it made permit innocent tax cuts that you wanted. what's the way to do this and is defense still going to be something that's on the table for cuts if you're going to avoid further tax increases and still reduce government spending? >> well, i think it -- defense is vulnerable. i would put it that way. whether sequestration gets turned off with other substituted savings, or whatever happens, we're going to see at best flat defense budgets i think as far as the eye can see. so that puts a burden on those of us in congress on those committees as well as the pentagon to figure out how we get more out of the money we spend already on defense. i think that's the great challenge going ahead. it's

learned in 2011, melvin was slapped with an $11 million tax lien by the irs. the doctor has not returned repeated calls from cnn. menendez acknowledges in a statement that he's flown on the doctor's corporate jet. the doctor has a vacation home at a lush seaside resort in the dominican republic. now, it appears the senate ethics committee may be involved. last fall, it got this e-mail complaint from a new jersey republican state senator asking for an investigation into those caribbean trips. the e-mail complaint questions whether menendez violated the code by quote repeatedly flying on a jet to the dominican republic and other locations and solisitting prostitution. last month, a watchdog group received an allegation he was partying with -- in the dominican republic. the group referred it to the fbi. more recently, a conservative blog published a link to videos of alleged prostitutes making claims against the senator. neither the fbi nor the ethics committee will say whether they are investigating senator menendez. >> very quickly, has he said anything about it? has he outright denied it

on their plans because of the uncertainty of dodd-frank, obamacare cause, tax increases, the president has spent more on economic stimulus and borrow more money than any president in history. his policies are not working and he does not like what business people are telling him. dagen: we talked about this earlier in the show. you look at what happened in the economy during the fourth quarter. we had a contraction if you are on the other side of the aisle don't you look at that and say, hey that is a very reason that the government needs to keep spending money. >> if that helps our economy, we would have the best economy in history. there were no spending cuts in the fourth quarter. we have not executed as a cluster yet. companies did begin to pull back. dagen: one that they are looking for is more infrastructure spending. we have heard that over and over again. why won't the white house get that? >> dagen, it is a different philosophy. the president and his party believe that the government is the central player in our economy. we talk about cutting spending, they think that hurts the economy.
